what makes us unique

We pride ourselves with maintaining the history and integrity of our downtown shop, while adding our own unique products and services. We remain a bookstore, office supply, and Hallmark store. We now off a wide variety of Melissa and Doug toys. We expanded to include a coffee shop and gift boutique in 2015.  This has quickly became a local hang out for young and old alike.  Most recently we have created a carry out lunch program which compliments nicely the soft serve icecream.  While many things continue to change, our small town values remain.

Our Mission:

We strive to provide the customer service and personal attention that you can only find in locally owned business.  We will focus on unique products, services , and menus to provide an exciting atmosphere that you want to return to again and again.

a bookstore with history

Scott-McCoppin Book Store has been a staple of the Phillipsburg downtown landscape since the 1920s. It was originally opened by a school teacher (Grace McCoppin) and good friend Winnie Scott. They thrived as strong female business owners in the community. To this day, many elders of the community can still remember coming into THE BOOKSTORE for their school books and comics and to see the pet cat in the window. The book store was sold to Ron & Stephanie Austin in 1979. Its success continued through the decades. On January 1, 2015, they sold the book store to its current owners, Chad and Jennifer Hamons. They quickly made it their own, by purchasing and adjoining the building next door creating Hometown Grounds Coffee and Gifts in November 2015. Changes continued in February 2017 when Scott-Mccoppin was remodeled and upgraded to a Hallmark Gold Crown Store. Hometown Grounds expanded in 2019 to offer soft-serve ice-cream. In June 2020 a carryout Lunch program began. One thing is for sure, this business has succeeded due to its history of talented ownership, and a love for the community they serve.
